Google Maps Proximity: Why Local Rankings Change by Search Location

A local business does not have one universal Google Maps ranking for an entire town.

Google explicitly includes distance in its local-ranking framework, so changing the searcher's location changes one of the conditions being evaluated. Query wording, relevance, prominence and the competing businesses available around that search point can also change what appears.

This is why checking your position once from your own phone is not enough to describe your geographic visibility.

If the customer does not share their location, Google says it uses what it knows about that location.

Geographic context matters because distance is part of Google's published local-ranking framework.

What it does not tell us is a fixed ranking radius, the weighting of distance, how many miles a business "should" rank or that the nearest business always wins.

Google keeps algorithm details confidential.

Why there is no single "my Maps ranking"

Imagine a business in Ballyclare.

One customer searches from near the business. Another searches several miles south. A third searches from Antrim.

Even if all three use identical words, the distance relationship differs.

Now suppose they use different queries: flat pack assembly, furniture assembly, handyman, flat pack assembly ballyclare.

The relevance context differs too. The local competitors Google could consider may also change around the search point.

So a statement such as "We rank number three in Google Maps" is incomplete unless it includes the query, the search location, the date and ideally the measurement method.

Proximity is important, but it is not the whole system

Relationship to the searcher's location.

Prominence

How established the business appears.

Relevance, distance and prominence work together; no percentage weighting is implied.

Google's local-ranking framework also includes relevance and prominence.

A closer business does not automatically have to outrank a more distant one.

Google explicitly says the factors work together to identify the best match.

That means geography creates constraints and variation, but it should not be interpreted as a simple nearest-business-wins algorithm.

Service-area businesses do not escape proximity

Service-area business owners often assume: "I have added the entire town to my Google Business Profile service area, so I should rank throughout it."

Google does not document the service-area field that way.

Its service-area documentation says the field helps tell customers where products and services are provided.

Its ranking documentation separately says distance is part of local ranking.

Therefore, adding a town as a service area is not evidence that Google will rank the business evenly across that town.

Nor is adding twenty service areas a documented method for increasing ranking reach.

Storefront and hybrid businesses experience geography too

A well-known shop may attract customers from a wide catchment. A highly regarded restaurant might have reviews from visitors across a region. A specialist garage might serve customers from many towns.

None of those facts removes distance from Google's documented local-ranking framework.

Customer catchment and Maps visibility are not necessarily the same thing.

A business can commercially serve a large area while having much stronger Maps visibility close to its location.

Think in terms of a geographic visibility footprint

Instead of asking: "What position am I?" ask: "What does my visibility look like across the area customers actually search from?"

That creates the idea of a geographic visibility footprint.

Suppose we measure the same query from 49 controlled coordinates across a town.

The business might be highly visible around some coordinates, moderately visible elsewhere and absent from the measured range at other points.

The pattern matters more than one isolated position. This is the purpose of geo-grid measurement.

What is a geo-grid?

A geo-grid tool repeats a local search from multiple specified coordinates and records the result at each point.

The result can be visualised as a grid over a map.

It can help answer questions such as:

  • Where is visibility strongest?
  • Where does it weaken?
  • Has the footprint changed over time?
  • Do two service areas behave differently?
  • Did visibility change after a major business or SEO change?

How to measure proximity effects responsibly

At summary level, useful comparisons require consistency.

  • Query: compare the same search intent.
  • Grid centre: do not move it casually.
  • Grid dimensions and spacing: keep scans comparable.
  • Date: record when the scan occurred.
  • Business changes: record significant website, GBP, review or link activity between scans.
  • Interpretation: look for meaningful patterns rather than one pin changing colour.

Without that discipline, a colourful map can look scientific while producing very weak evidence.

What not to conclude from one scan

Suppose one grid point moves from position six to position three. That alone does not prove your latest website edit worked.

Other possibilities include:

  • competitor changes;
  • temporary result variation;
  • a competitor opening or closing;
  • review activity;
  • query interpretation changes;
  • Google updates;
  • measurement variability.

Likewise, one weak pin does not prove a penalty. A useful experiment needs repeated measurement and a record of concurrent changes.

Is there a fixed Google Maps ranking radius?

UNKNOWN / NOT ESTABLISHED

Google does not publish a universal ranking radius. Any claim that businesses have a fixed three-mile, five-mile or ten-mile Maps radius is not a current Google rule.

Different industries, locations, query specificity, business density, relevance and prominence can produce different geographic patterns.

It is more accurate to measure the actual footprint than to assume a radius.

Can a business rank further away?

Sometimes businesses are visible at meaningful distances from their location. But there is no switch that disables geography.

A business can work on things it genuinely controls:

  • stronger relevance to important services;
  • accurate Business Profile information;
  • appropriate categories;
  • useful website content;
  • legitimate reviews;
  • real authority and links;
  • genuine local evidence.

Those improvements may affect the overall competitive picture. They do not make distance disappear.

Geographic expansion is therefore a strategy question rather than a trick for defeating proximity.

McKnight's Flat Pack Assembly is an appropriate project for proximity measurement because it is a genuine service-area business.

The operating base is Ballyclare, while the website states that the business serves Ballyclare and selected surrounding locations and has additional geographic pages for Antrim and Newtownabbey.

The correct approach is not to invent current Maps positions.

At the time this page is drafted, no verified comparable geo-grid dataset has been supplied for publication. So the case study should begin with a baseline.

Proposed baseline

Record:

  • keyword/search intent;
  • scan date;
  • grid centre;
  • grid size;
  • spacing/radius;
  • Maps positions across every coordinate;
  • current review state;
  • current GBP categories;
  • recent website changes;
  • recent links or major citations;
  • any known competitor changes.

Then repeat with comparable settings.

Questions the project can answer

  • Does visibility consistently weaken away from the Ballyclare base?
  • How does the footprint differ between furniture-assembly queries?
  • Does visibility towards genuine surrounding service areas change over time?
  • What happens alongside improvements in website relevance, reviews or authority?

Questions it cannot automatically answer

  • If visibility expands after several changes, which exact change caused it?
  • Was a movement caused by the business or a competitor?
  • Would another industry behave identically?

These limitations should remain visible in the published case study.

Practical implications

For a local business owner, proximity leads to five useful conclusions.

  1. Stop treating one manual search as your universal ranking.
  2. Distinguish the area you serve from the area where you are currently visible.
  3. Do not assume editing GBP service areas expands Maps reach.
  4. Measure geographic performance consistently before drawing conclusions.
  5. Judge expansion commercially as well as visually. A beautiful green grid has little value if it produces no worthwhile customers.
